Darwin Culture, Events & Festivals

Darwin has had a turbulent history. The large scale destruction caused by Cyclone Tracey on Christmas Day, 1974, and the damage inflicted by war-time bombing is part of the history of Darwin.

However, much of it has been rebuilt and so few signs of its history remain. Now Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory, has grown and developed into a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with just the right touch of the easy-going 'she'll be right' top-end charm.

This Northern Territory city is home to 75 nationalities, each bringing with them their own traditions and cuisine, resulting in some of the most fabulous Darwin festivals and events. These include: India@Mindil, the Greek Festival, Glenti, Chinese New Year and Speargrass Festival, plus local Aussie events such as the Darwin Beercan Regatta and premier horse race, the Darwin Cup.

There are many outlets in Darwin where you can purchase traditional Aboriginal Australian paintings. For those with a fine appreciation or who wish to learn more about Aboriginal art, the Indigenous Art Awards are a prestigious showcase of the finest throughout the Territory and Torres Strait Islands.

Accommodation, Darwin style, ranges from tropical caravan and camping parks, backpacker hostels, B&Bs, holiday apartments and motels up to 4-star luxury. The Darwin weather makes it an ideal winter escape.

Darwin, Australia, is the launching place to stunning Katherine Gorge located in the magnificent Nitmiluk National Park, and the internationally renowned and unique, wilderness area of Kakadu National Park just outside Darwin.

Travel down to Uluru and Alice Springs is easy with daily flights, or why not catch the famous Ghan?
